Transform education by integrating Indigenous knowledge systems and challenging colonial structures within the curriculum.
Indigenous and decolonial pedagogies center Indigenous worldviews, knowledge systems, and relational ways of learning. They challenge colonial narratives, promote cultural resurgence, and prioritize land-based, community-rooted education. These pedagogies foster respect, equity, and healing by valuing Indigenous voices and disrupting dominant power structures in teaching and learning.

Land-based learning
Land-based learning uses Indigenous knowledge to learn from the land in its natural setting. It emphasizes that the land should not be treated as a resource, and we should have connection, humility, reciprocity, and accountability to it.
Decolonization
Decolonization is the process of undoing the effects of colonialism that exist in our education systems. This requires a mindset shift which would lead to more equitable and inclusive learning.
Collaboration with Indigenous communities
UBC is on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Indigenous people of the land. Their deep understanding can inform the multidisciplinary teaching at the Faculty of Arts. Collaboration with the Indigenous community provides an opportunity for students to not only learn from the experts of this area but also establish a link and awareness with the community that would extend beyond their time at UBC.
